I love spring time, and almost as soon as the snow melts I am itching to get out in my yard. I love a good hard day of work in the garden. I have really been wanting to expand my garden space this year, I would like to be more self sufficient and help contribute, with good quality food, to our dinner table. A friend suggested box gardening or square foot gardening last summer, and so this spring we did it! PIC made me three 4×4 boxes and the plan is to at least make one more for our summer crops. (I found a really good article on growing potatoes in boxes, so I am going to try it). Yesterday, even though it was sooooo cold, I planted my spring vegetables.
In the first box, I have three types of leaf lettuce and a square of spinach. It is only 1/4 planted right now, in about three weeks I will plant the next set of squares, and so on… That way I will have good fresh lettuce until it gets too hot.
The next box has 8 squares of Sweet Peas. Have you ever smelled sweet peas? They make wonderful cut flowers, and they make the house smell really good. The other half has early cabbage (PIC’s request) and early carrots.
The very last box it full of peas. Half sweet sugar (sweet sugar anything sounds wonderful doesn’t it!) snap peas and the other half regular shelling peas.
I can’t wait. In about 10 days I will start seeing little shoots come up, and I promise that I will take pictures and share them with you all!!!
aren’t you so excited!
I’m jealous. Our garden still has a few inches of snow on it. Not that I’ll be planting in THAT garden anyway, but I wish I was planting instead of packing. I’m beginning to worry that our garden isn’t going to happen as much as I would like this year. Hopefully there won’t be any catastrophes with grops until next year. lol They look great
You know, I try to grow sweet peas every year, and I’ve never been able to even get them to sprout! Not even one time! You are so good!
I love peas fresh from the garden, they are the best! You are so domestic!
Those are pretty cool looking boxes. I wonder who made them and hauled the dirt and stuff for you?
Hey Aimee, since you’re planting potatoes and carrots I thought I’d share a little secret we learned from a farmer friend that Trav has in Idaho. When the potatoes and carrots are ready you pull them up and if you put some dirt in a rubber maid and then put the carrots and potatoes in and put more dirt on top of them and store them in a dark, cool place like your basement, storage room, cellar etc. then they will stay good all through the winter. You can put layers of dirt then veggies, then dirt, then veggies so that you can keep plenty in one rubbermaid.
Just in case you didn’t know.
Thanks, I have also heard that peat moss works well too.
Yay!
I was just thinking it is probably time to plant my peas. So I will get out there! My garden space is so SMALL I have to decide on one or two things. I think I will do carrots and peas this spring. Thanks for getting me on the ball!!
Yummy! My mom always grows peas and we love to go and pick them and eat them fresh! Good for you!!
