Ahhhh Man!

You know you are old when you are at the check-out counter of the grocery store making small talk with the nice 19 year old checker and he asks you how many kids you have.

“five” I say smiling, expecting the usual response of “wow, you don’t look old enough to have that many kids.”

instead I got:

“oh, five, that is a nice bunch…so do you have any that are still in school?”

**gasp** did he just say what I thought he said? My oldest child is 9 for heaven sake! I am only 31!!! Do I look old enough to have kids graduated from high school!!!

Oh wow, I need a make-over!

  1. That’s REALLY funny! I don’t think you look any where close to that age! I am sure that it will happen to me one day, I am still waiting to look older. Some one asked me when I was shopping for my birthday if I was doing school shopping!

  2. In my twenties I so much wanted to look my age. I went into the OB for my second pregnancy. The nurse asked, How old are you, 14? I gasped, hugged my toddler, and said that I was twenty.

Now I’m in my mid-40s. I think I still look a lot younger than the gals my age. I have very few wrinkles. But I don’t want to dye my grey. You see, I have really dark hair between the grey and don’t want to look like a skunk when the roots grow out.

The other day this lady in my ward was telling me something about another woman. She said, you know she’s about our age. No way! The talking lady is almost 60.

  3. I remember the first time someone called me “ma’am”. I was 22 years old and our neighbors (pot-smoking college kids) couldn’t have been much younger. “Is our music too loud for you guys, ma’am?” (I guess they were polite pot smokers) Of course, I did have two kids. It still shocked me so much, I’ve never forgotten.

I was sad when I realised the other day that I don’t get the “you look too young” comment near as often as I used to (I’m only 32, but 6 kids can age you quickly).

  4. What a dagger in the heart! But NO one who knows ANYTHING about ANYTHING would think you were that old! (now me? maybe!) It still wierds me out to be called maam, even though I guess that’s what I am!
