Garden Ramble

This past weekend was beautiful and unseasonably cold.
The high on Saturday was 70 degrees, about 20+ degrees below normal.
We broke record that day.

It was like a wonderful breath of fresh air!

We spent the whole day outside gardening and getting some much neglected chores done.
I love this time of year when the garden is bursting with produce.

This is a cabbage that I harvested about 2 weeks ago, there are little baby cabbages starting off the leftover stump. Usually I just pull up the stump and re-plant, but I am going to leave this one and see what happens.

The green beans are big and there are hundreds of flowers on the vine.

I planted pole beans all around the chicken run and shed, it shades the animals and makes the ugly shed look much prettier.

Here we have chives in bloom, and wild sunflower and red-runner pole beans, I love the unusual red flower of this particular bean.

I just finished reading a book called “In Defense of Food”. There are going to be some major changes in the way we eat around here. It makes me feel like all my efforts in the garden are worth it, I have healthier, organic foods at my finger tips for the cost of seed and my (free) labor.

What kinds of things are you harvesting from your gardens right now?

  1. Your garden looks great! I love what you did with the beans. All we're getting now is tomatoes, because that's all I planted. Boy are they good!

I read that book, too, and it made me want to do more gardening as well. 🙂

  2. Ah! Your photos are wonderful!!I especially like the top one–oh and the ones with sunflowers (love those flowers!!!)
Ready to harvest: 2 kinds plums. figs, a strawberry, Swiss chard, lettuce, possibly a few lingonberries — and herbs.
    Blessings, Aimee

  3. I'm currently reading In Defense of Food!

As for our garden, it's small and growing slowly 🙂 We've got lots of fresh basil but we're still waiting on tomatoes, peppers and potatoes.

  4. I'm harvesting whatever my nice friends and neighbors pass on to me from their gardens 🙂

  5. red potatoes soon, hopefully, if all the plants don't die off…that's it…i didn't really plant this year, i was largely pregnant and i knew i wouldn't have the energy to do all that the garden required…as it was, my flowers were sadly neglected…the squirrels at the heads off of my sunflowers, before they even bloomed and the bunnies at my strawberries…so i MIGHT get some potatoes…

  6. Seeing your beautiful pictures makes me envious, covetous, and jealous because the southwest heat scorches, burns, and bakes any vegetables we grow here. We've learned to garden and harvest early to avoid the summer temperature bake-a-thon. Our garden is currently barren, but will be ready for fall planting soon.
It's just great that your garden is still producing! Looks wonderful!

  7. I love seeing pictures from your garden.
I have spent almost zero time in my yard and garden this year. Even though it has been so mild out here this summer I have not felt much in the mood to work in the garden. I get lazy when I am pregnant…
