My Mission

Mission. What does mission mean? What does it mean to have a mission in life? The past few weeks I have been really thinking a lot about my life’s mission.

The dictionary defines missions as: an assigned or self-imposed duty or task; calling; vocation.

So again I wonder “what is my mission?”

First and fore most I am a mother and a homemaker and I take that roll very seriously. It is my calling. I have always wanted to be mother, even when I was very small and was asked in school what I wanted to be when I grew up. The answer was always “a mom”.

I am left to wonder if there isn’t something more.

Is there something else that my Heavenly Father put me on this earth at this time to do? I don’t have grand illusions of influencing nations or even large numbers of people. However, is there someone out there that I am suppose teach, love or befriend? In my pondering I realized that I will never know the answers to those questions unless I ask. My Father in Heaven knows me perfectly and knows what I am capable of. I need to ask daily to be an instrument in His hands. I need to ask for guidance and direction so I can help Him in His work.

That is my goal for the New Year: to ask daily and then to act upon those promptings.

  1. I think most of us wonder what our mission is from time to time. I wondered the same thing for about six months or so, and did the same thing as you, asked in prayer what it is I am supposed to be doing. I felt unsettled and knew what I was doing wasn't long term even though I loved my job. The night my sister-in-law passed away my answer came as clear as day – my mission was to be the mother to two more little girls. I may not be their biological mother, but I am their mother in every other sense of the word. I've never been more sure of what my mission is in my life. I think your goal is a great one, and I think that's something everyone should do. You're awesome Aimee!

  2. Wow. I really needed to hear this. I've been wondering some of the same things lately. I hope that if anything happens that you feel good about sharing, you will.

  3. Good Idea! I think we all as women need to do this.

We have been putting together a Women's Conference for our stake its called Daughters Arise and we're using the Woman at the well as inspiration and theme. We want the sisters in our stake to drink of the Living Waters. As we have been going through organizing we have had many fasts, prayers on our knees, and lots of scripture study. Last night we really challenaged ourselves to study and find that meaning in John 4 and why this woman. This morning I read it again and I think I have some insight into why..

We are women and we are so important in the eternal plan. More than we or the world lets us realize.

I think getting down on our knees in prayer is so important and asking to see ourselves as Heavenly Father sees us. I think we can really learn alot from that simple picture of ourselves and how important we are.

  4. The short, fleeting years when a mother has children at home should be reserved for home and family. You will do no greater work than to raise righteous men and women–good citizens. There is plenty of time afterward to save the world.

  5. Being a mother is the most important role, but if you've developed nothing else during these years then empty nesting is going to be horrific! I love your goal.

  6. Good post for me to ponder about!

I have learned that being a mother incorporates so much! And you influence many people by your example and through your children.
My patriarchal blessing has helped me know general directions to pray about, but to everything there is a season. I think our missions change at times that we need to pray continually.
