Favorite Things: Butter Mold

When my Great Grandma passed away I inherited this little gem.

I have always like this little tool, and while I never saw her use it, she would let me get it off the shelf and play with it.

It is a butter mold, and if I remember correctly it belonged to her Mother, who died when she was a very little girl.

It is really easy to use and adds a little special something to your dinner table.

I made a batch of butter today and thought I would show you all how to use a butter mold.

It is really hard.

First you pack the butter in the mold, I use my fingers, because it is easier to pack the butter into all the corners with fingers.

Then you press the bottom on the plate and pull the cover off and there you go!
Fun and simple.

It is the perfect amount of butter for a hot roll or two and looks really pretty on a plate.

Have you inherited any fun little gadgets?

  1. I love it!! How wonderful to have something passed down, and to cherish.

  2. I LOVE your butter molds! What a wonderful family heirloom and so nice that you continue to use them as did your great grandmother!
Thought of you the other day when I was watching a program on the Handcart Immigrants to Utah. Very well done program; very brave settlers!
    Blessings, Aimee

  3. Now I want a butter mold! I have a 1915 Singer Hemstitcher. My husband likes to use it more than I do!

  4. That is so adorable.

When my grandparents died I was given all her sewing stuff. Sewing box, fabrics, etc. My aunt and mom got the sewing machines… Sometimes I will use thread that she bought for 10 cents maybe before I was born. Or a pack of needles.

  5. I have never inherited anything! So I can't really comment on that I guess, but I LOVE the butter mold! I have never seen anything like it before.

  6. My grandma is 93 and is having fun giving out her treasures while she is still alive. Last summer she gave me several tea cups, antique linens, and a little toothpick holder that once belonged to her mother, Kathryn Louise. Alas—no butter mold.

  7. Now I need a butter mold. I didn't need one 10 minutes ago! How do these things happen to me?

  8. That is so precious. PS, I'm jealous about you getting to make butter. I'm paranoid about buying raw milk though. Not about the health risks, but about getting caught. Thoughts?

  9. Raw Milk. It is legal in Utah to sell raw milk. There are laws governing raw milk daries, they have to test their milk and cows regularly to prove they are diesase free. I don't worry one bit about the safty of my milk. My milk comes from 100% grass fed (hay in the winer) cow that live on a farm close to me. Cattle aren't meant to eat grain, period. They are healty Jersey cattle that are being farmed the way they were ment to be.

However, if I lived in a state that didn't allow raw milk I would do several things. First I wouldn't drink milk, if I couldn't find it raw. Second I would write letters (often) to all my governing bodies to ask for personal freedom to eat and drink what I want. Third I would look into cow sharing, you buy a share of a cow and since you "own" the cow you can legally drink the milk raw, it is one way people are getting around the law. Fourth, if I couldn't do cow sharing and I could find a source of raw milk that I trusted I would buy it anyway. The law isn't going to go after you, it will go after the dairy, and really I would hope that law makers are busy doing other things than going after people who drink raw milk.

Whew, sorry, long answer to short question. I could go on and on about raw milk, but I won't 😉

  10. Not only do I LOVE the mold, I LOVE how the butter turns out! I want one now 🙂

  11. This is very cool. I remember reading about butter molds in the Little House books and was always fascinated. It's fun to see a real one! I have my great grandmother's sewing machine. I love it-I have a copy of her journal where she talks a little bit about using it. I have never used it though. I'm afraid I'll break it!

  12. I have a few things from my grandma but not any gadgets like yours. Your butter mold is really neat, especially since it has been in your family for so long.

  13. I have never seen one of these before…that is SO cool! What a treasure to have something handed down to you ~
