Seasonal Food

In this day and age where you can get asparagus from South American in December, and Winter Squash in July are there some foods that are still “seasonal”? Technically, there really isn’t, we can pretty much get any food year around, however are there certain foods that mean a certain season to you?

This question was posed by a facebook friend a few weeks ago and it got me thinking a little. I would like to eat more seasonally and locally. Food retains its nutritional value when it is only transported a few dozen miles as opposed to several thousand. Especially as we (my family) become more and more dependent on the food we produce ourselves, I see us becoming seasonal eaters, like our grandparents were.

I decided to make of list of the foods I think of when I think of a particular seasons. I would love to know your list of foods too!

Spring:

Salad greens, especially Spinach

Strawberries!

Asparagus.

Summer:

 Potato Salad
(specifically my Mom’s recipe)
Fresh veggies from the garden
Hamburgers and Hot Dogs
(4th of July anyone!)

Fall

Apples

Winter Squash
 Tomato soup

(any canned tomatoes, for this is the season I bottle up gazillions of them!)

Winter

Hearty soups and stews

Hot Breads

Roasted root veggies

What are your seasonal favorites?

  4. This is fun to think about!

Spring: green salads, strawberries, sandwiches (picnic time)

Summer: anything bbq, watermelon, pasta salads

Fall: apples, zucchini bread, chili and cornbread

    Winter: potatoes, stews, oranges

  5. Pomegranates! I love them SOOO much. I liked them before they became cool, and they were MUCH cheaper back then.

  6. We used to sell berries at Pike's Place Market in the 80s. I think of berries of all kinds as summer fare. Strawberries May-June. Raspberries July. Blue and Black berries August and a bit of Sept. We lived on berries and I still can't get enough.

The only berries I know of that are available in the spring come from California.
