So here is the question for all (three) of you who read my blog:
1. Have you?
2. Would you?
3. Why?

Never used cloth. Probably wouldn't again unless life was radically different. I did my time with cloth diapers when my youngest 3 siblings were babies – changing them and washing them. I can't tell you how many cloth diapers get "accidentally" flushed when being rinsed out in the toilet. And, they always leaked. So, why? I don't have the time and I'm lazy.
I like the idea of cloth diapers, and it looks like they have come a long way in design, but have too many memories of having to rinse out my little brothers' diapers. Also, it's just another mess I would have to worry about when I'm already tired and sore…wow, I sound like a big whiner…you are a better woman than I am, Amie.
Ooops! Sorry–I spelled your name wrong. I knew it wasn't right. 🙂
I use disposable, but my friends are loving cloth diapers for home use. They feel it is really convenient and Eco friendly. I guess that is debatable but they still love them but change to disposable if the are leaving the house.
I never had younger siblings with cloth diapers so maybe that's why I have done it! I don't find it a big deal at all when I am at home, but I am all for convenience when I am out. It has saved me money which is a plus! It doesn't hurt to at least try and oh well if it doesn't work out.
I've have (and am) with the last seven of our eight children. Cloth diapers have come so far. They don't leak if you get the right ones and use them correctly. I am now finally venturing into sewing my own. We figure the amount of money we saved using cloth has been about $1500 per child. That's over $10,000 and counting! Although still saving $1500 with one is nothing to sneeze at in my book.
My favorites are Motherease, which you do need to use a diaper cover with, and BumGenius which you don't.
Never have done the cloth diaper thing. Jas' sister did on her second of four. She said that she wanted to use them because they keep down diaper rash. But she also used a service that would wash them for you. I think it ended up being more expensive. Let me know how it goes. Good luck!
I did cloth diapers with my oldest 14 years ago because we were too poor for the disposables. Since we were poor, we could only afford the old-fashioned rectangles from Wal-Mart with the plastic covers. Not only did I HATE it, my poor boy always got the worst yeast infections! I'm sure it would be a different story now that they have come so darn far in design, and you don't even have to rinse them anymore if you use a liner.
I would consider it again simply for the cost savings and also because I like the idea of it from a self-reliance perspective. IF I could find and procure the right kind of diapers.
I used them with all 3 of mine and loved them. Yes, they can be frustrating, but I look at them as taking a dollar and wrapping around their little butts and then tossing it away. My 2nd couldn't wear plastic. I handwashed my boy's diapers an 18 month old and newborn.
We even used them the entire 3 years we lived off grid I had not a problem with them. When there were times I needed ease, like when we all had the flu and were in bed for over a week. Or when we moved cross country with 2 in diapers I used the plastic.
I used the ones from walmart prefolds since they didn't have all the fancy ones then, like now. If I had to do it all over again I would.

My kids never had diaper rashes unless we used plastic diapers. My daugter was 6 months old before she had her first.

I found your blog while seeing who else on Facebook had my name! I saw this question at the top of the blog and had to respond 🙂 (I swear I'm not a creeper! lol)
We used cloth on our first from the time he was a couple of months old. We got the BumGenius 3.0 one sized pocket diapers. Loved them! Never a leak or a rash. SO easy! The only time we used disposables once he had grown into them was when we went camping over the weekend when he was about four months old. I wish we hadn't even bothered them to be honest. We went on a trip when he was almost crawling later on and just brought the cloth 🙂
I never bothered rinsing the diapers while he was excusively breastfed (so for an entire six months, yay), and you can get a super handy sprayer you can attach to your toilet so you don't even have to dunk them! It can also double as a bidet (classy, right!? ;D)
With our second (current) baby we rarely use diapers at all so these are lasting even longer as far as wear. We discovered elimination communication and couldn't be happier. It is such an amazing thing and I am so glad we get to do it with our baby. I just wish we had known about it for our first. Cloth diapering + EC = wonderful!
I am absolutely planning on using cloth diapers for my kids one day. As others said, they are not your mother's diapers. What does it hurt to try?
Did with my younger siblings and like many here, it was awful. Did not with my kids. Just make sure you wash them regularly!!!! I had a friend who swore by cloth diapers and would always go on and on about them, but I hated going to her house because it reeked of stinky diapers.
Cloth diapers rock! I was so excited when I got pregnant with baby number 3, so I could use my cloth diapers again. I love Fuzzi Bunz, and they have gotten even better in the last few years. Nothing beat good (Green Mountain Diaper) prefolds and awesome covers (flip, weehuggers, duo wraps from thirsties) for newborns. Good luck!
Decades ago I started with cloth diapers – which I hated because of the mess. Later we changed to the disposables – which I liked because of the convenience. These days–if we were doing this all again, I would try the new cloth ones with a liner but I wouldn't feel guilty if they didn't work out and I decided to change back to disposables. Love watching your 'babystrology' widget! Life is such a miracle!! Blessings, A
Yes, I did. I made some like the ones you picture. Mostly I used bird's eye pre-folded and plastic pants. I did it with most of mine most of the time. It was cheap and gentle.
I have friends who use cloth after the newborn stage and love it. Wish you luck! It seems great in principle and I'm all about saving money, but this is one area I wouldn't have the patience for. I admire those of you who do!
I want to use cloth for the baby coming in just a few weeks, but since we're still waiting on a reimbursement cheque we might ecing for awhile before we can make the purchase-it's a lot up front!
